Our seasoned acupuncturist, Leah Sidhu shares her recommendations when it comes to getting the best outcomes from your acupuncture sessions.

1. Create space to relax after your acupuncture session

Many of us have merged with the fast lane and are living overly scheduled lives and acupuncture can help us to slow down a little and come off the freeway. While some clients schedule their sessions in between work or before heading to the gym, it really is best if you can make some space to enjoy the post acupuncture bliss. While acupuncture is known to improve productivity, clarity of mind and increase our energy, we’ll get the best results if we let the treatment soak in.

2. Avoid coffee prior to having acupuncture

Coffee is known to increase our heart rate, stimulate Central Nervous System (CNS) activity and even cause restlessness. We want to aim to reduce this heightened activity in the body, which acupuncture can help with. So coffee works against achieving the results we’re working towards and therefore limits the benefits you’re able to enjoy.

3. Wear comfortable loose clothing

While acupuncture is regularly applied to hands and feet, often we also need to access acupuncture points located on the body usually hidden under our clothing, such as shoulders, torso and back. It’s best to wear loose fitting clothing so we can treat the necessary areas for the best results. However, there is no cause for concern if you are unable to wear suitable attire, we can always cover you up with our soft towels.

4. Schedule follow-up treatments

Research shows that acupuncture delivers the best results when treatment is frequent. While it’s likely you may feel great after your session and perhaps that pain has been resolved, for example, it’s still ideal to confirm subsequent treatments to solidify your results.

Many conditions also require maintenance to keep the symptoms from flaring-up again. Leah recommends regular appointments until a noticeable result is achieved. This allows time for the client to experience the positive affects and the benefits of consistency.

5. Follow the guidance of your practitioner.

Acupuncturists are highly trained and have years of clinical experience, which equips them with the knowledge of what may or may not work. Leah has been practising for more than 16 years, following four years of study, which includes 10 weeks at Nanjing Provincial Hospital, China. Also, you can trust a good practitioner to refer you when something is out of their skill set.
